The Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HERRCO), the initiative of the Greek businesses operating in packaging production and marketing of packaged products and the Scouts of Greece (Soma Hellinon Proskopon - SHP), the largest voluntary, pedagogical movement for young people in Greece, are proud to announce their collaboration toward a sustainable future.

The two parties agreed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation with a view to implementing a series of targeted actions and initiatives to promote recycling and to raise public awareness on environmental protection issues.

The programmed objectives agreed between HERRCO and the Scouts of Greece (Soma Hellinon Proskopon - SHP) include, among other things:

•Deepening the relations between the two bodies by creating joint working groups to design and implement joint programmes

•Promoting voluntary activities, education and awareness-raising in the area of recycling and circular economy.

•Cooperation and organization of joint dissemination and information campaigns on recycling.

For the citizens, the blue bins that are now in almost every neighbourhood, are synonymous with recycling, while HERRCO is still contributing to making recycling part of the citizens' consciousness. In 2019 alone, collection vehicles performed more than 125,000 recyclable materials collection routes from the OTAs, while there was a 12% increase in the results of glass packaging recycling from the blue bells compared to the previous year.

In turn, the Scouts, who have been active in 350 neighbourhoods in Greece for the last 111 years, educate and raise awareness in the Greek society with young boys and girls who act as responsible citizens playing an active role in it. Thus, as ambassadors of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Scouts try to keep in mind the protection of nature parameter, in every aspect of their daily lives, while implementing over 1,200 environmental and social actions per year.

The Scouts will act as the ambassadors of a greener Society by setting a goal to have contributed to the increase of the country's entire recycling programme quantitative data by 2030. The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by the Chairman Michael Economakis on behalf of HERRCO and by the President Isidoros Kanetis on behalf of the SHP Foundation.

Mr. Economakis stated: “We are particularly pleased with our cooperation with the Scouts of Greece. The recycling and environmental protection message is important and must go through the country's largest voluntary organization for youth, which is also pedagogical. We will stand by the Scouts and support them with their activities and their work towards environmental protection within the framework of our operation. By thanking the President of the Scouts of Greece, we thank all the scouts in Greece.”

In turn, Mr. Kanetis stated: “A few days ago  we celebrated  World Scout Day (22/2), we come as Scouts to practice our global motto “Building a better world”, in collaboration with the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation. Our goal is not only to set an example for recycling, but to activate and educate our Society on its importance. A conclusive act with a positive ecological impact, whose results will be experienced by future generations.”
